Sandra Van Opstal had an event come up for her new book. She couldn’t miss it and tried to make her schedule fit us in but it didn’t work and had to step down. Hopefully we will see her at a future Deeply Rooted! As I (Tammy) thought of a replacement I went through our list of potential speakers and one name jumped out at me. June Felix. We met at a Rooted Chicago (no relation) brunch last year. I can’t remember if she spoke or not, but my friend Courtney told me about her, insisted I needed to meet her.
After the brunch I went up to Juni and introduced myself. After some small talk we got deeper and we shared some hard stuff with each other and I just knew I needed this woman to be my friend. We exchanged numbers and we kept up with each other a bit.
Juni is a serious gamer and science fiction and fantasy geek. Who better to share how wonder has shaped her spiritual life and imagination?
Juni is half of the Moody morning radio show Karl & June. From her Moody bio: June is a woman of prayer. As an author, speaker, international radio drama scriptwriter, C.S. Lewis Institute Fellow and host, she has a heart for women’s ministry, discipleship, and encouraging all ages with a passionate faith and a warm smile. Sandra Van Opstal pastors at Grace and Peace Community in Chicago and is the author of The Next Worship and The Mission of Worship. A liturgist and activist, she is passionate about mobilizing Christians for reconciliation and justice. She frequently consults, speaks, and writes on topics of racial identity and global mission. Sandra serves as a board member for Evangelicals for Justice and the Christian Community Development Association.
Rev. Velda Love is the director of justice and intercultural learning in the Office of Diversity’s Collaboratory for Urban and Intercultural Learning at North Park University. Velda collaborates with various academic schools to develop curricular and co-curricular opportunities with an emphasis on social justice related issues.
Velda completed a MATS from North Park Theological Seminary and is Ordained to Specialized Ministry in Social Justice in the Evangelical Covenant Church. She is a pastoral assistant at Second Baptist Church in Evanston, Ill., and serves on various boards and task forces that address interfaith dialogue, homelessness, and youth incarceration. She is completing her DMin in social transformation from Chicago Theological Seminary.

Deeply Rooted was AMAZING. God showed up in a powerful way through our worship, speakers, and fellowship, and over 100 women were present. The design and decorations were absolutely beautiful and inspiring. We are so thankful to all of YOU for your service, prayers, encouragement, and faithfulness. This was a dream come true for Joy & I and we were blown away by the team that banded together and threw their lot in with us. We will be throwing this party again on Saturday, May 21st. Save the date!!

Deeply Rooted is a free one-night event for women and girls 6th grade and up. We have a gifted worship band to call us together and Anita Scott, poetry slam competitor at this year’s Justice Conference, is traveling from Dallas to perform spoken-word poetry for us. Sandy Ramsey, director of Cornerstone Community Outreach, a shelter for homeless women, children, and families, will be reminding us of our commitment to the poor, and a former CCO client, Denise, will be sharing her testimony of God’s protection and providence.
Katherine Williams is a lifelong learner—a seminary student who spent a year at Oxford, a gifted speaker and writer—who will be sharing about the eight blessings in the Beatitudes and how we need a deeper understanding of what being blessed really means.
